Present simple vs continuous (progressive) tense

Simon's cat is chasing the fly around the living room while Simon is sleeping. The cat is making a mess of  the living room but Simon is not waking up. The cat catches the fly and brings it to him as a gift. Poor Simon ends up with a fly in his belly.
